CocciPlus

CocciPlus

Cocci/Plus treats coccidiosis watery droppings which are found in the small intestines of birds. Their eggs called oocysts, are passed in the droppings. The two main species are Eimeria and Isospora.

Signs of Coccidiosis are Diarrhea, weight loss, poor growth  and death in young birds, decreased egg production, you may notice a decrease in food and water intake and a general sick appearance. Some birds can carry the oranisms and may not show signs of illness until the bird is put under stress. Birds may develop a pasty butt which is when the fecal material builds up on and around the birds vent and surrounding feathers. This is usually a sign of diarrhea and has to be treated. Things that can happen to baby chicks is stress from shipping or incorrect temperatures in the brooder can cause diarrhea if you notice this in your chicks you should clean the fecal material away from the vent as soon as possible, just use some warm water and gently clean the area. Another symptom often seen in chicks infected by Coccidian is bloody diarrhea. Some birds may appear droopy and will have un-kept feathers. Birds should be treated 4 times a year or as needed, and a must for babies fledging the nest, or if you start loosing babies in the nest with a pasty butt.

Prevention is almost impossible to completely prevent your birds from being infected with this parasite. Birds can be kept in wire floor cages to help reduce the risk of this infection.

Treatment: Treat for 5 to 7 days.

Preventative use 1/2 teaspoon to 1 gallon of water.

Coccidia is seen in budgerigars, pigeons, finches, canaries, doves, chickens, can be seen any many species of birds. When in nest boxes this can be a place where birds can get coccidiosis as they get very nasty with droppings and moisture. Damp floors in the aviary can be of great concern.

Treatment of secondary infections caused by bacteria may also be necessary. Sometimes a repeat treatment may be necessary.

After babies have fledged the nest they should be treated along with the parents.
